On April 26, 2024, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection filed a report on Select Connecticut Energy Supply Issues pursuant to Public Act 23-102-Section 35. The Study looked at the feasibility of deploying small modular reactors, advanced reactors, fusion energy facilities, and other zero carbon resources; the process for and best practices for certain power purchase agreements; and the capability of the state’s gas supply system. It provides findings and recommendations for each of these topical areas including:
- Continue monitoring and analysis of advanced nuclear technologies as well as potential market and other mechanisms that could be used to incentivize and/or help overcome barriers to deployment in New England’s deregulated market.
- Continue peer sharing through national organizations to understand and benchmark advanced nuclear policies adopted by other states and explore their possible applicability in Connecticut.
- Initiate the next Integrated Resources Plan in 2024 to monitor the state’s progress in meeting the 2040 zero carbon electric sector target.
- Further refine, understand, and make use of ISO-New England’s technical tools and analysis to identify measures needed to address challenges associated with winter constraints.
