On August 2, 2022, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adam announced $70 million for 30,000 heat pumps in New York City Public Housing facilities. The funding announcement is part of the Clean Heat for All Challenge, a collaboration between New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), New York Power Authority, and New York City Housing Authority to develop new electric heating and cooling technologies for multifamily buildings. Manufacturers Midea America and Gradient will develop their technologies to meet Clean Heat for All Challenge specifications of a scalable heating and cooling solution for occupied multifamily buildings that address installation problems that contribute to the high costs of heat pumps. The technologies will be tested in 60 apartments over a winter season before they are deployed across 30,000 units. NYSERDA is providing $13 million for the initial purchase of the technologies and performance monitoring. For more information visit the NYSERDA website.
