As part of a Maryland and Virginia initiative to facilitate the conversion of streetlights by local governments to LEDs, the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) recently published a report outlining potential cost-savings related to upgraded streetlighting technologies in municipalities. The report summarizes lessons-learned from the Municipal LED Streetlight Program to date while discussing potential barriers going forward. The report also includes a description of the benefits of LED streetlights, exemplary legislative changes in other states, and the basic elements needed for a successful LED streetlight conversion program. The report and project, which includes technical assistance extended to eligible towns and counties across Maryland and Virginia, is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. Project partners include NASEO, the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy; the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; and the Northern Virginia Regional Committee.
