The National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) is the only national nonprofit organization representing the governor-designated energy directors and their offices – the State Energy Offices – from the 56 States and Territories across the nation.  Formed by the states in 1986, NASEO facilitates sharing of best practices among states, serves as a technical and policy resource for states, and advocates the interests of State Energy Offices to Congress and federal agencies.

Energizing America, Every Day
Every day, State Energy Offices work to ensure their state’s residents and businesses have access to reliable, affordable, abundant, and cleaner energy. Through partnerships with energy providers and innovators, State Energy Offices lead the way in helping the United States achieve greater national energy security, economic competitiveness, and energy affordability. With policy leadership from their governors and state legislatures, State Energy Offices are:
  • Streamlining energy permitting, planning, and siting to create a more robust and modern electricity transmission and distribution system;
  • Supporting the private sector in developing more electric generation from advanced nuclear, geothermal, natural gas, storage, and renewables.
  • Promoting the use of modern, grid technologies such as advanced conductors, AI-automated load management solutions, and other grid-enhancing technologies;
  • Reducing the risks of and impacts from energy supply disruptions caused by natural disasters and cyber and physical attacks to the electric grid and petroleum and natural gas fuel systems;
  • Developing policies and support the nations critical energy-related minerals extraction, recovery, and processing supply chain;
  • Improving the energy efficiency of the homes, businesses, data centers and manufactures to lower energy costs for all Americans;
  • Advancing workforce training and STEM education programs in partnership with energy companies and local governments; and
  • Supporting private sector research and innovation to deliver new energy storage and utilization options such as fusion, solid state batteries, and geologic hydrogen.
A Vital Energy Link
State Energy Offices are a vital link across state energy policy goals, federal energy policy actions, and private-sector energy solutions. The proactive policy and program roles of State Energy Offices make them key “go to” offices for governors and state legislatures, and critical patterns for federal agencies, utilities, fuel providers, energy innovators, and local governments.
