The state is adding $1 million to a program that provides thousands of dollars in incentives for people, businesses and municipalities buying electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.
The Connecticut Hydrogen and Electric Automobile Purchase Rebate Program, kown as CHEAPR, will still provide rebates of up to $3,000 for purchases of hybrid, plug-in and full-battery electric cars and will now be offering incentives of up to $5,000 for buyers of hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. The rebates are only available for cars costing less than $60,000.
State officials said the new funding will bring the total for the program to $3 million and enable it to continue another year.
The program is funded by Eversource Energy, which set a commitment to it as part of an agreement during the $4.7 billion Northeast Utilities-NSTAR merger that created the company in 2012.
